The
Frenchman Pierre-Joseph Redoute (1759-1840) is considered the greatest
plant illustrator of all time.
This series of prints being offered were reproduced from Redoute's
"Choix
des plus belles fleurs et des plus beaux fruits"
originally
published from 1827-1833.
These were copied from original
stipple-engravings kept at the British Museum.
Unlike
other Redoute botanical reprints, these were not retouched, thus, the
prints show whatever foxing, spotting, and discoloration the originals
have accumulated in almost 200 years.
Here
are how original Redoute really look today - aging gracefully, still
magnificent, without having to look like Redoute painted them just
yesterday. |
