"The
Botanical Register" first
published by Sydenham Edwards(1834)
one of the original illustrators for Curtis's
Botanical Magazine.
The
Botanical Register--a periodical of monthly parts, consisting of a
series of engraved and hand-colored botanical plates, along with
descriptive text-was founded in 1827 by Sydenham Edwards,
the
long-time artist for the "Botanical Magazine".
He
left the Botanical Magazine because of a dispute with the editor
concerning his salary, and it was for this reason that he started up the
rival Botanical Register. The Botanical Magazine suffered artistically
after Edwards departed, and subscriptions declined in part because of
the competition offered by the Register.
Publication
of the Register continued through 1847.
